“I have another question my dads apt all he has is a square cable box with a remote its hooked up via HDMI to the TV HDMI3 and he gets his basic cable it works but when you go to scan channels it says none are recognized.”

When you use the scan channel feature, that is for over the air channels through an antenna. You don't need to do that scan feature if he has a cable box. The cable box is where he gets his channels.
