• Answering my own question :) I have a FastVPN subscription but its "native" app would not work in this version of Android. FastVPN supports OpenVPN protocol and the OpenVPN client app from Google Play is compatible with the device. I am able to use the FastVPN service after installing the "profile" file manually.

• Yes you can but you're far better off just paying for a VPN and put their on software on the tv. It pays to spend a little bit of money.
