THE ECHO DOT WORKS BY ITSELF. YOU DO NOT NEED THE AMAZON ECHO UNIT TO USE THE ECHO DOT. 
SO DOES THE GOOGLE HOME MINI. YOU DO NOT NEED THE GOOGLE HOME WITH THE GOOGLE HOME MINI. 
THE SMALLER DEVICES WORK THE SAME AS THE BIGGER DEVICES. THE DIFFERENCE IS THE PRICE AND THAT IS BECAUSE THE BIGGER SIZES HAVE BETTER SPEAKERS.
BUT THEY ARE THE SAME. THE SMALLER UNITS HELPS SAVE A TON OF MONEY AND YOU CAN BUY 3 SMALL UNITS ALMOST FOR THE PRICE OF 1 BIG UNIT. AND THE SMALLER DEVICES HAVE REALLY DECENT SPEAKERS

You only need wifi and that is extent of it. Enjoy. I have one in every room with a Google home in the kitchen. I can play music throuhout the house by asking Google to play Music on Home Audio
