Do I have to use the window exhaust kit? null

Yes, you do, or the heat will just come back into the house. You open the window and put in the plastic adjustable piece and it will allow you to close the window. Then you attach the hose.

My unit came with the exhaust hose and an insert for the window.

Absolutely. If you don't, it'll kick off more heat that it can cool. Exhaust hose is short so it'll need to be close to a window.
