Our central A/C system broke down at the beginning of the hottest weekend of the year; it was in the area of 115+ outside. Not good. Our ranch style house was built in 1957 and insulation didn’t seem to have been a priority with the developer as our place seems to be essentially devoid of any. It quickly became over 95 degrees in my living room. I needed a portable A/C unit quick to at least make the bedroom tolerable until the central system could be fixed. After a quick look on the Best Buy website, I decided a 14,000 BTU model would do the trick in the short term but when I arrived at BB the only unit still available was this one at only 10,000 BTU. I could order one of the more powerful units, but then I’d have to wait several business days for delivery. Still, I was hoping this could at least make the 10’ x 12’ bedroom endurable. Before I proceed, I really must warn you. The manufacturers of these type of units all stress portability. Sure. Be advised that this is extremely subjective and qualified! Technically, yes, it’s indeed portable. But so is your washing machine if it has casters. And so is a piano. Out of the box, the actual unit itself seemed decent enough, but unfortunately two major shortcomings were immediately obvious. 1) the duct hose supplied is about 4 feet long when extended, which is far too short for flexibility (no pun intended) of location. 2) the power cord is, likewise, far too short. If you are not fortunate enough to have a window that isn’t too high from the floor AND has a power outlet in its very immediate vicinity, you are going to be right out of luck (actually, SOL). If you’re thinking, “No problem, I’ll get a longer length of duct hose and just use an extension cord” then you’d be wrong. The manual very specifically states that using another duct hose and/or a longer length of hose will end up causing a malfunction. It also states very plainly to NOT use an extension cord. I was lucky and the window/power outlet arrangement I had to deal with was just barely within the dimension parameters to allow the unit to be connected. I had to rest the unit on a small table to make this arrangement work and had to place a towel on the table so the casters wouldn’t allow the unit to simply roll off at the slightest provocation. I suppose I could’ve upended the unit and removed the casters, but I wasn’t inclined to do that. After fiddling with the supplied window kit, I had the ducting hose set up and faced the moment of truth. I turned it on and enjoyed a nice blast of cold air. Success! The temperature window displayed ’99.’ Could that be right? Maybe… it was awfully hot in that room. As the display only utilized two digits, it may well have been hotter. Yikes! I figured, “Oh well, in an hour or two at most it ought to be more bearable.” After twelve hours – yes, that’s not a typo – it had cooled down overnight to a mere 83. Did I mention I also had the room’s 52” ceiling fan going at its fastest speed and two stand-alone fans belting away? In conclusion, I would have to say that this machine is a step up from just opening the fridge door and sticking your head in, but not by much. If you have a very small room and aren’t dealing with such extreme temperatures, you may find this adequate. I will be returning this and exchanging it for a more powerful unit once they are in stock.

I purchased two of these units (from BEST BUY), one for my condominium and one for my mother-in-law's condominium...both condos have the exact same floor plan and window arrangement. The first thing I noticed when I unboxed the unit was that the exhaust tube was very short, and when it was installed, it became even shorter because you have to bend it up from the back of the air conditioner and bend it again at the window. The power cord length was ok. The unit looks nice, well built, and everything is plastic. My windows are "sliders" going right to left and the base of the window is 60 inches from the floor. I had to get a small table to set the unit on...in order for the exhaust tube to reach the window opening. I was able to put the adjustable window piece (the exhaust tube hooks into) into a vertical position to accommodate the slider. Because the window frame has an area that the actual window slides into, I put a 2x2 piece of wood into the frame first, then put the AC plastic piece in, and then closed the window up against the plastic insert, and put another 2x2 into the track so that the window could no be slid open from the outside, and so that the AC window piece would stay in place. I then duct taped the plastic insert to the actual window frame. There is a small gap between the plastic insert and the edge of the window itself. The AC unit is very heavy, and you may need help in lifting or moving it, although it does roll very easily (even on carpet) on its wheels. NOTE: The INSTRUCTION BOOK and the INSTRUCTIONS on the AC unit itself say, DO NOT.. EXTEND THE LENGTH OF THE EXHAUST DUCT. That means that you should not add (for example) a 10' section of tube to exhaust the AC out the window. According to the instructions, adding length could cause damage to the AC unit itself. Instructions also say, "Do not add an extension electrical cord." The exhaust from the AC unit that goes out the window is very warm and similar to the volume of exhaust from a clothes dryer. The instrument panel is easy to understand and to operate and so is the remote. I set the AC temp for 73... temp outside was around 90 at its worse. The unit does blow fairly decent cold air in a straight line out the top. The air volume is barely enough to cool down (for example) a small bedroom. If your room opens into another adjacent room, the cold air will not go into the other room. The air from my unit didn't even cool down a small 7x7 room directly to the left of where the unit was sitting. It did cool down the area directly in front of it, but not to a great extent. The room temperature stayed at 78 for the most part. Without the air conditioner, and using just floor fans, the room would stay at 80-81. I only used my two units for less than 2 days and decided that they were not going to work for me. NOT cold enough and the short exhaust tube was a real problem. The AC unit sitting on a folding table was just an accident waiting to happen. Instructions say the unit must be 20" from the wall which made the table have to sit even further out into the room. When I took it back to Best Buy, I was met by a "mini-manager" that gave me the "third degree"... "Where did you buy it," "Did you use it," "DId it come from the internet"..and on and on. He was clearly not happy to see the units not come back to his store. I asked if returning them was a problem and he said "yes,"... he could not resell them if I used them. As an ELITE Best Buy member, I have purchased a lot of items from Best Buy, and this is sure a new one for me. I might add that when I bought the two units, I asked if they could be returned if I did not like them, and of course, the answer was yes... "You can return anything to Best Buy." After a great deal of intrigue with the "mini-manager," he said that he would have to talk to the "maxi-manager"....and of course, the "maxi-manager"... said "Yes," of course we will accept them...as long as they were not broken." From what I gather, he planned to put them out on the floor, discounted. I also showed both managers a photo of how I had to install the units on a table, and both managers said the installation was really not their concern, They said that most people add more length to the exhaust tube to accommodate their installation needs. I told them that was a no-no, but they seemed to suggest that THAT...is what most people do anyway. All is well that ends well...they took them back and I received a refund. I had the units 10 days, but only used them for a tad more than one and a half days. They were in perfect re-sellable condition. IF you have a small room, with regular slide up and down windows that are only a foot or two above the floor, and there is an outlet right there at the window (instructions say no extension cord use), and if your small room only opens to one door, and you don't mind quite a bit of noise, I think this unit might be ok for your use. Note, it is a fairly expensive unit for what it does. Note too: If you buy your unit from Best Buy or anyone else for that matter, get a very clear understanding as to what the return policy is ...if you use it and you are not happy with it...for any reason.

Ok let me be clear i gave it 5 stars for a variety of reasons and i will get into it now amd the Pros of this unit far out weigh the cons Pros: I do live streaming online in my 130 sqr ft room so small and i was affraid the audio produced by this unit but was not disappointed, this unit though only 6 ft from my microphone doesnt trigger it at all even when compressor kicks off. Unit being portable is really convenient and still allows me to make use of of the window on cool nights vs loosing it to a window unit. Run it minimum 5 hrs a day and am 3 weeks in and have yet to need to empty the water tray and this was my single greatest concern, if yours as well dont fear it this unit goes a long time before having to even think about it. My office is on the sunny side of the house and heats quickly along with all the computer equipment and monitors going and this unit does a great job keeping up even on days its 110 outside. Cons: I know i just said it does amazing in the high heat which it does but if your room is not properly insulated which mine is not it can struggle a little keeping the room cool but still maintains a solid 78-80 when 110 out but thats only time ive seen it struggle. Another issue for me at least is i found if back of unit is facing toward where you sleep or you are sitting behind it the unit is vastly louder with the back of the unit facing you, now that is only from the rear of the unit, front facing side has little noise pollution as its well proofed there as i said it doesnt even pick up on a professional grade microphone. Conclusion: I spent 3 months researching wall units and portable units, including multiple honeywell units, this by far is the only one that met my requirements amd it is meeting them splendidly and would not hesitate to buy another down the line and recommend to anyone i meet or know this exact unit and BTU rating. Yes Price tag is up there but using this for over a month now and i mean really working it, it has already earned its worth. Dont think because its pricey its just a giant paper weight, i found through 3 months of looking at Portable units you have no option but to spend a bit more but what you get is quality and comfort. 10/10 Honeywell and 10/10 for bestbuy having a solid review system in place to help make this purchase and i dont review items i purchase from anything, i am only doing this because from start to finish i have been very happy and impressed with this units quality and the info i was able to obtain from across multiple regions of the US to make a very informed decision on my purchase. I hope this yet long review is helpful for anyone else looking to purchase one of these units.

Ahhh good ol' summer of 2017! Think that's a great start for this review. Record setting heat temps in local area since 15 yrs ago. This AC unit is a slice of coolness I highly recommend! (Read the Instruction Book!) I had it set-up fairly quickly. It works outstanding, & talk about blowing very cold air... it does that too! :) My windows slide horizontally, not vertically. Set-up was quick, the little plastic pins that are suppose to 'hold' the three window pieces together.. worthless, toss 'em! So, here are some tips.... First, on the window itself, along with the window framing, use sticky-backed window installation, Cut to size for window itself, & inside window frame. Peel the protective backing off & adhere. (Keep the protective tape on the upper & lower (or sides, if your windows open vertically) pieces. This way you can remove the exhaust tube vent & still be able to close the window). Instead of using those 2 little push-in pins to hold the 3 pieces together... use small zip-ties to keep the pieces together! (Make note, on ALL 3 pieces, there are multiple holes, make sure you have ALL 3 window pieces w/ the multiple holes on one side!! Very important!) Next, once fitting is good, look on other side of the 3 window pieces.. you'll notice a single hole on 2 pieces. Get your cordless drill out, find right size bit to drill through the single holes (there are 2). Zip tie those as well. Now your window piece is solid, no wiggling, curving, etc. .Place the exhaust vent into window & close window. To keep it a very tight seal, use the window locks, the kind that screw to the window framing. I used 2, upper & lower. Nice tight seal, no outside heated air is coming in! Yeah!! I highly recommend you reading the manual. As you will have to drain condensation from the unit. When draining, unscrew bottom plug & remove (mine is red) the rubber plug. Drain, place rubber plug back into place & screw plug back on. Be careful not to over tighten.... it's plastic to plastic. I placed 1x2's under my unit's wheels to allow for air circulation under unit, as well as it makes it sooo much easier to get a small pan (I'm using the small drip pan from my toaster over ;) to drain the condensation from the unit). And there you have it!! AWESOME UNIT!! And yes, us women can do it all...lol! Highly recommend this A/C unit!! Also purchased the 4 year Geek warr.~ fix or replace @ N/C!!

Stands well above other Portable ACs

Over the past 6 years we have owned 5 different brands of portable ACs. 3 are currently being used and 2 have met their maker. We currently have a DeLonghi in our daughter's room that does a good job. The main benefit of this unit is that the cycling on/off is not so jarring it can wake her up. In our main room we have a Royal Sovereign which is loud and clunky but does a decent job of cooling. A portable AC rated at 10,000 BTUs is good for a medium sized room in a not very hot climate. We live on the coast in Los Angeles and this one does very well in a 12x15 room. We just had a heat wave where the outside temp got up to 85 and the humidity was around 70%. This unit took a while to cool down the room in the evening but not that much longer than our previous, 12,000 BTU unit. Another thing this was a good test of is how well it evaporates moisture. Too many units need to have the drip tray emptied after only a few hours of running in moderate humidity. We have not had to empty this one after almost 3 weeks and close to 100 hours of running. Pros- 1-Nice control panel that lights up to touch and shuts back off after a few seconds. 2-A beep that is loud enough to hear but not so loud that it wakes up my wife if I need to change a setting when she's asleep 3-Cools very well for its rated BTUs 4-Decent looking and not too heavy 5-Came with everything needed for set up Cons- 1- Display is a little too bright when it's on. It seems blinding in a dark room. But it does shut back off after a few seconds so it's not horrible. 2- It's just a little too jarring when the compressor turns on and off. Part of this is that the compressor and exhaust fan start and stop at the same exact time. Our DeLonghi and our old Everstar both offset these 2 so there isn't as much of a sudden jolt on or off. Having said that, it is no where near as jarring as the Royal Sovereign in our main room. Overall, I really have to sing the praises of this unit. It does a good job of cooling without making too much noise or taking up too much room. I've had units that had to have a permanent drain hose, some that are way too loud to use in a bedroom but this seems like a very well engineered and built unit. I am hoping to have this one for a long time.

    Great Portable AC Unit

I have read reviews on other sites concerning this particular unit and was at first apprehensive on buying it. There were a few complaints about the amount of noise it made and the cheap plastic used for venting. However, there are numerous web sites that rated this AC unit as one of the best so I decided to give it a try. I am actually very pleased with the unit. It does a very good job of cooling the room I purchased it for (about 250 sq. ft) and it does it with no trouble. I went with the 10,000 BTU unit because a lot of sites state that portable AC's are less efficient than window units so it is best to go a size up. With that in mind I am convinced that it could cool a 350 sq. ft. room with ease even on the hottest of days. As for peoples complaints that it is loud, it is an AC unit, what do you expect? On the positive side I believe that this unit is less noisy than a comparable window AC. With the fan on HIGH and unit cooling the peak decibel output I measured was 70. Looking at a DB scale this is just above the level of a normal human conversation. The unit is a bit on the large side so if you are cramped for space this may not be the unit you want to purchase. The controls are easy to use and navigate. I do like that you can set it to dehumidify without cooling, I think that is a big plus. You can also set it for the number of hours until it turns on and the temperature you want it to cool to. The remote is nothing special, very basic, but it works well so you don't have to get up from what you are doing to turn the unit on/off or adjust temperature levels. As for the bad side. This is a heavy unit, 68 lbs - over 70 in the box and the box is difficult to move alone. Also, the plastic used for the exhaust system is %$#@. The piece that plugs into the window kit cracked as I was installing it. The same piece doesn't fit well as other people have stated and if you wish could use a bit of duct tape to shore it up. I also would like to have seen the window kit come with a longer extension. One of the things you will need is insulation window tape. The window kit will NOT seal out the elements on its own.

Does an alright job, expensive for what it does

We needed an air conditioner in a pinch due to our HVAC dying and not being able to get someone to come out for a week in the dead middle of summer. Before looking, I didn't even know you could get a portable AC unit that doesn't require constant draining so that feature is a welcome surprise. We slapped this puppy in our bedroom and set up the vent out the window in fairly quick fashion. I managed to break the small plastic pins that come with the window bracket, so be careful with those, they are low quality. The window also doesn't close all the way due to the uneven size of the bracket and sliding extension piece, so we stuffed the gap with socks. Overall the unit does a good, not great, job of cooling the room. I like it very cold at night and unfortunately this unit cannot get the room any cooler than 70 and the air that comes out is more cool than cold. The bedroom is pretty well insulated so I'm not sure why it has such a hard time getting the temperature down. I was expecting something of this size and price to overall do a better job but it beats sleeping in a humid 85 degree room. Noise doesn't really bother me, I usually sleep with a loud tower fan and this isn't much different. Exhaust hose does get very warm when the unit is under load and is a bit concerning but we haven't had any problems yet. Overall I would go with another product over this one if I had to purchase again.

I bought this airconditioner for a top (third floor) condo bedroom in Menlo Park California. I knew it would get very little use, as the climate is dry and the ocean air cooled air arrives at night. But it can get rather warm in the afternoon. My major concern was how to vent it with only a sliding glass door as an option. The opening is 79 inches, and the solution was to use acrylic. I had a piece of acrylic cut to size.. 1/8 th inch thick so the connector would snap in. 6 inches by 79 1/2 inches, and I brought in the connector so they could cut the hole so it could snap in. I love tap plastics.. It looks like it is attached to a window.. And the price was less than $50. The unit is properly vented out the door now, and it starts cooling within a few minutes, taking the room to chilly in one hour.

This AC unit is wonderful! I had a small window unit in my bedroom before I picked up this one. The previous unit was a 10,000 BTU fridgidaire window unit. It was AWEFUL! It could not cool the room correctly, allowed hot air and bugs to get in. The unit wound up getting moldy from the excess moisture. I bought the Honey Well 12,000 BTU unit for my 500 sq ft sitting room last year. It is WONDERFUL! It keeps my room cool, doesn't have to be turned down past a normal room temperature, doesn't cause moisture in the air, doesn't allow bugs and heat to get into the room, is not bulky, and best of all, easy to install and uninstall if need be. Knowing that this product would be great for my bedroom, I purchased the 10,000 BTU for my bedroom. I LOVE it even more than the one in my sittingroom! I can turn it down and direct the air so that it hits me directly while I am sleeping or turn it up so that it hits the ceiling fan and causes it to move the air through the entire room. I REALLY like Honeywell over all. I actually purchased a Honeywell fan for my office years ago and it is still my favorite fan!

    Excellent portable A/C unit

I’ve owned several portable AC units over the years and they all had the same problem: noise. This A/C is still loud of course, there is no way of silencing an entire cooling system compressed into that case. But it definitely runs quieter than any others I’ve tried. When the compressor kicks on it is a much more subtle noise, as the exhaust fan slowly speeds up after the compressor is already running. It has made it much easier to sleep in the same room as the AC. The fan is powerful and the air is ice cold, my only gripe is that it doesn’t have any sort of automatic flaps to direct the air around the room, you will need another fan to help it cool the entire space. One last thing- they say not to run the unit for several hours after unpacking it and there is good reason for this!! The compressor oil needs to settle back into it before the first start or after moving it at any angle, otherwise it runs with liquid refidgerant where oil should be. This is bad. It will last much longer if you take the time.

Hi Ryan, Thank you for your thoughtful review of our Honeywell Portable Air Conditioner. We are glad to hear that you're satisfied with the performance and minimum noise level of this unit. However, we do note your additional feedback here about the lack of automatic flaps to circulate air around the room on this particular model. The unit was easily assembled, and was up and running very quickly. It is quite portable, however it MUST have an exhaust to vent hot air. Otherwise you're cooling in the front and heating in the back. It's quite similar to a dryer vent. It says it cools 350 square feet and that's just about right. Don't think it's going to stretch much more than that and just bring the temp down a little. It's designed for a bedroom or a living room, or possibly a man cave or small garage. Being near it has more cooling, and using it in conjunction with a fan may help cool the area quickly. The air that comes out does so with good force/pressure, and the unit is designed so that you can adjust the height that the air exits the machine by a very simple mechanism (think moving the ports around on a cars ac vent). All in all a good little unit. Just don't ask it to do more that it is recommended for. For the price and the square footage a decent window unit is probably better, for if you want to be easily able to go from room to room or take it on a trip this is pretty easy to move around.

After reading some of the reviews I was a bit nervous about buying this product, but I am so glad I did. After 5 days, I feel like I can provide an honest review of the product. What I like about the AC is the easy set up! The unit does come with an installation kit and an easy to follow manual. My only issue with the installation is the length of the hose. I would of preferred it to be a little longer so that I can move it around. my apartment more (personal gripe). The AC cools off my apartment very well. You can adjust the temperature to your liking and it has a low and high level. I love the digital controls and my favorite feature is the timer on it. Before I leave for work, I turn on the timer and when I come home from my day the air is on and my apartment is cool. The noise level is pretty average. It doesn't bother me at all. Overall, I am very satisfied with the product. I highly recommend purchasing this unit.

We hit a couple straight weeks in the high 90's which made running the A/C for a large, 2-story house an expensive proposition. So we left the house warm (about 77) and used this unit to cool the Master suite (about 300 sq ft) down to 68 so we could sleep. Worked great! Sound: You'll know it's running! It's not quiet, but it's not a bad noise. In fact it's a pretty good "white noise" for covering up traffic and siren sounds outside. Installation: Not a problem, but it must be close to a window, and while the large diameter exhaust hose is flexible, it's not as flexible as you'd get from a clothes dryer hose, so the unit is forced to sit out in the room a couple of feet. Not exactly unobtrusive, but well worth it for the result. So whether you need to cool a small, unairconditioned space, or one room in a larger house, this is a great solution.

I had the A/C unit for only a week. When I first picked it up at the store I could not start the unit yet since additional items needed to be purchased in order to have it hooked up to the window. That was an extra $25. So a week before the store 14- day warranty expired we started up the machine. It was working okay at first but the real test was when the heat wave hit. It was 120° outside. it kept the room at 80° nothing lower then that. Then during the night as is got a bit cooler the outside temperature was 75° but the A/C wouldn't go lower then 78°. We tried everything we could to troubleshoot and nothing. Will never buy a Honeywell again. Even the customer service from Honeywell was terrible. When we asked for an extra extension for the window they refused to give it to us. They treated it like gold. Don't waste your money.

Nice machine, but not for the cost

This air conditioner is a nice unit. It cooled down my living room within a few hours and maintains good temperature, but there is lots to be desired. The unit is very costly for a 10,000 BTU unit. It can be loud, not disturbing, but enough noise that my Amazon Echo is unable to listen for commands while it is on. The vent hose for the unit is ridiculously short! Any movement has the entire vent coming out of the window, which had happened at least 3 times already. Sometimes the buttons don't get you to the cooling setting you were expecting, but powering it off and then back on helps. On the good side, I have been able to integrate this with my Logitech Harmony for wireless control through my phone including turning the unit off/on and changing the temperature. The function toggle doesn't work, but the most important parts do. While I would recommend this unit to friends and family, I would also encourage some shopping around for better units in the same price range.

Well it's actually a 350 sq ft and says so on the box. No where else does it mention 398 sq ft except in the ad. It also doesn't have a purify setting like it is mentioned in the advertising. Other than that, it cools fine for small rooms. I have had it running in our master bedroom for 14 hours now, it started at 79 degrees yesterday evening and this morning the room was down to 73 but has gone up to 74 now around noon. It's on its highest cool setting and still not enough for our 250 sq ft room, with black out shades on windows and insulation over our patio doors. I could see where this would be really useful in an office a small shop or small bedroom. Its quiet, it does blow cold, works for what it is but wish they advertised it correctly. Really was hoping for the purification setting it says it has.

So my local Best Buy did a nice discount by price matching their online price. Made it worth it to get the larger unit. This one also had the evap. built into the exhaust so no water bucket to empty. The hose and window adapter was real simple to attach and run. Nice semi-rigid hose. I figured buying the larger unit I wouldn't have to run it as hard to get the same cooling as a smaller one and it might be less noisy for a bedroom. Not the case. I wouldn't say it's real noisy but still not so quiet. I guess it's just good white noise. One kind of big issue is that the exhaust hose gets pretty warm from the evap. unit. Adds more heat to the room as it's cooling. Also, I think the air going into the room should be colder. It's just cool, but that might be common to most newer generation A/Cs. Oh well. At least it was a good deal.

This product works great!! Purchased it during the hot summer in Georgia when the central AC was broken in my house. Although this was the same brand I intended to purchase they did not have the 12,000 BTU model in store so I ended up purchasing a 10,000 BTU model. It surprisingly has cooled my 500 sf room. It was easy to set up and install, I am not mechanically inclined. When I first turn the unit on and set the thermostat to 61 degrees on high, it cooled the room down to 72 degrees from 98 degrees in less than 2 hours. And within 24hrs it was a steady 65 degrees in my room. This was a great purchase! So far no issues of any kind and I've remained cool & comfortable! The remote is a wonderful feature, I can adjust the temperature/ setting from clear across the room without leaving my bed when I get too cold at night. Another great feature is the timer. I would certainly purchase this unit again, if needed and highly recommend!

I would rate this slightly about average. The price was great, relative to competitors. We use this to cool a bedroom, and it does a good job of taking the edge off the heat. Definitely cools it down enough to sleep. I like it like an ice box, so I may be asking too much. But it does the job. My chief criticism is that it is too loud. Seemed quiet enough in the store, but when trying to sleep, it is just a bit too loud. I've slept with the hum of AC's before -- and actually, that can help me sleep. But the noise of this one is above a hum. In fairness, it my bed were further away from the unit, maybe it would be quieter. Otherwise, no complaints. It's pretty easy to set up. I wish the air vent tube fit better, but you can get it in there. It's convenient that we don't have to empty the water. We do it once a week, but it is so little volume, it's prob not even necessary.
