I would recommend it. We had the same issue; fortunately, I have a contractor doing some unrelated work and he took out some tools and made sure it had a good-sized opening. Don't know if there are spare parts, but cutting it didn't seem too much of an issue for my contractor (who's handy, while I"m not).
