“I have a window that is 16.5" wide. I know the adapter fits a minimum of 26". Is there any other way to install this using that window or will I need to choose a different location?”

The window venting kit that comes with the unit measures 26.6 inches. Since your windows are much smaller than this, you will need to modify the window venting bracket. This can be done simply by cutting it, at a local hardware store.
