In the 21st century, real time monitoring of fan speed vs current draw will provide much more reliable & specific data for timely HEPA filter replacement. But the 5300B doesn't do that. As HEPA filters saturate w/ particulates held, the fan will need to draw more power to maintain operational speeds. High quality, telemerized fans are OTS commodities today. Monitoring them is equally trivial. Changes in fan power draw will be a more specific & accurate indicator of required filter changes than a filter saturation indifferent, cumulative runtime, filter change clock. The filter change sensor is built on an internal timer that counts the total amount of time the unit has been run since it has been reset. The light will come on based on the rated life of the filters, which is 12 months of use.
