  • QuestionWhere can we purchase the “enhanced odor and VOC filter S”? These don’t seem to be available or even listed for sale anywhere!

    Asked by Matt.

    • Answer As of late Sept 2020, no place. A Honeywell point of contact (POC) admitted they've been selling this air purifier model for months but none of the S filters were available or even produced. POC said they will be manufactured and may be for sale in or by November.

  • QuestionHow many and cost of filters

    Asked by Maria.

    • Answer It uses one pre-filter (HRF-AP1) and 3 HEPA filters (HRF-R3 - already contains the 3 filters). Genuine Honeywell pre-filter is about $15 and needs replacement 3 months. HEPA filter is around $60 and needs replacement once a year. Alternative brands are much cheaper and available online.

  • QuestionIn terms of performance, how does this model, the HPA5300b compare to the HPA300? Is the only major difference the amount of filter it utilizes?

    Asked by Megs.

    • Answer Thank you for your inquiry. Both of these units use the same number of R and A filters. However, the HPA5300 covers 500 square feet rather than 465 square feet that the HPA300 does. Its cleaning rates are also similarly higher. Additionally, the HPA5300 has an Automatic cleaning mode that can detect VOCs in the air and alter the unit's performance to clean them from the air faster. • QuestionIs the motor in the unit brushless or brushed? Many have noted the unit is not energy star certified compared to competion. What wattage does the unit run at from minimum to maximum speed options?

    Asked by Jason.

    • Answer It never ceases to amaze me that Honeywell claims "trade secret," "proprietary" information concerning basic specifications & materials used, that all of my high-end power hand tool providers are only too happy to disclose as legitimate bragging rights. As a 5300B owner, who has NOT disassembled or formally reverse engineered the unit, I can reasonably surmise, purely from direct unit observation & 3 disclosures from Honeywell that the fan in my 5300B, which is Energy Star certified, is an AC *induction* motor &, therefore, *brushless*. First, Honeywell discloses that the motor is AC, that the unit consumes 162watts in Turbo mode & that the standard warranty is 5yrs for 24hrs x 365dys of continuous operation. The 5yr warranty for continuous use heavily points to brushless AC induction - mechanical brushes fail sooner, rather than later. The (relatively high) 162 maximum watt consumption in Turbo mode points AGAINST DC brushless & towards less power efficient AC induction. The quietness of the fan, in all non-Turbo modes, points against any mechanical motor brushes. As mechanical brushes wear, they are prone to generating ozone from brush "sparking," too. I never smell any ozone around my 5300B. I would be only too happy to see Honeywell reverse itself & disclose the type of AC motor that is in the 5300B. I always prefer transparency over opacity. I am never fearful of correcting myself in the face of facts. Facts are all that finally matter. No one is asking Honeywell to disclose the MAKE or the specific MODEL of this fan. I agree that those details are LEGITIMATE "trade secrets." Honeywell, please rethink & reformulate the answer to this question.

  • QuestionIs this unit very noisy? Can it be used in the living room and still be able to hear the TV?

    Asked by Judyt.

    • Answer I have a 500 square foot unit in my living room and at low level it is no problem for sound on the tv. Note: I do have surround sound but do not run it loud.

  • QuestionI’m confused about the filters. When you buy it, can the unit be used right away? Are the necessary filters in the box? What is this “optional “filter everyone mentions? Thank you

    Asked by Joan.

    • Answer I just purchased this unit and everything you need is in the box! There are extra filters you can purchase to enhance the unit, so if you have a smoker or lets say you cook a lot and have a lot of cooking odors, you can buy the corresponding extra filter to help with those issues but you don't have to have them to use the unit

  • QuestionHONEYWELL:: Is there a fuller designation for the R/HEPA filter? H 13? H A-13-A? H 14?

    Asked by WhiskeyTango.

    • Answer Refusal to define "True" HEPA, using established, *standardized* nomenclature is HIGHLY UNFORTUNATE. I encourage Honeywell reps here to escalate my reasonable request for additional information to the entities within Honeywell that have the authority to permit disclosure. If Honeywell's R/HEPA filters are H A-13-A or H 14, they would be better than average for this market segment. That would be legitimate "bragging rights." H 13 is the bare minimum I would hope for - which is average/baseline in this market segment. In the meanwhile, "True" is meaningless marketing hype to me. Being deliberately opaque reassures no one.

  • QuestionDoes 5300B measure fan load (current draw to sustain specific RPM-s) as part of determining filter replacement time? Or is the time-to-replace a fixed countdown timer/clock?

    Asked by WhiskeyTango.

    • Answer In the 21st century, real time monitoring of fan speed vs current draw will provide much more reliable & specific data for timely HEPA filter replacement. But the 5300B doesn't do that. As HEPA filters saturate w/ particulates held, the fan will need to draw more power to maintain operational speeds. High quality, telemerized fans are OTS commodities today. Monitoring them is equally trivial. Changes in fan power draw will be a more specific & accurate indicator of required filter changes than a filter saturation indifferent, cumulative runtime, filter change clock. Not as elegantly engineered as I would like, Honeywell...

  • QuestionCan the prefilter be cleaned by rinsing with water? I’ve been running my air purifier for about two weeks now. And I notice the prefilter is accumulating some dust.

    Asked by Alfonze.

    • Answer No you cannot rinse it. It is suggested you don't vacuum it either but I have and do or I would be replacing the pre filter in a week

  • QuestionShould this unit be producing a slightly noticeable but not strong odor like plastic+chemical+slightburning? I have a hypersensitivity to odors. Does this unit have any effect on an internal ICD/pacemaker(EMF)?

    Asked by COPD.

    • Answer There should be no "burning" smell whatsoever. If you smell "burning"/melting, return the unit as defective. Straight out of the retail box, the two layers of plastic bagging definitely impart a slight plastic bag aroma onto the unpacked unit. I wiped my 5300B down twice with a damp microfiber cloth (rinsing out the cloth between wipedowns). Then, after installing the unwrapped R/HEPA filters and unwrapped A/pre-filter, I ran my 5300B in Turbo mode for two hours. When I set the 5300B into Auto mode, all trace odors were gone. (During the Turbo mode shakedown, I tested the 5300B for intake leakages that bypass the filters and found none.) The A/pre-filter is activated charcoal, treated with xeolite. Uncontaminated activated charcoal is ordorless. It is supposed to *absorb* and *trap* odors until the contaminants overwhelm the carbon. Xeolite is an anti-microbial mineral salt. It inhibits odors by suppressing bacterial growth. Zeolite is usually odorless, but that depends on the actual salts used, which can vary. Xeolite is also hypoallergenic. Some people (not me) even mix powdered forms of xeolite with water to drink it. (I hope it is pharmaceutical grade zeolite.) As a filter treatment, xeolite should not irritate your airways. If in doubt, you should consult with an allergist about your own sensitivities to it. This unit is sold with all of the usual FCC disclaimers about radio interference. The 5300B utilizes no WiFi or Bluetooth radios itself. Unless you were to physically lean/lay in direct physical contact with the 5300B, the inverse square law of radiated EM power over distance should protect body-embedded medical devices, like pacemakers. If you can safely be near a notebook computer, the 5300B should be no more EM dangerous in similar, reasonable physical proximity.

  • QuestionWhat is the expected continuous service life of the VOC sensor? Is there required/recommended cleaning to maintain accuracy of sensor readings? What/how to?

    Asked by WhiskeyTango.

    • Answer Thank you for your inquiry. The life of the VOC sensor is the same as the life of the unit. The sensor should not need to be cleaned regularly, only if something touches it or if you feel it may need to be cleaned. To clean the sensor, use a small cotton swab dampened, but not dripping, with isopropyl alcohol to clean any residue off the sensor. Then let the sensor dry for at least 15 minutes before using it.
