It never ceases to amaze me that Honeywell claims "trade secret," "proprietary" information concerning basic specifications & materials used, that all of my high-end power hand tool providers are only too happy to disclose as legitimate bragging rights. As a 5300B owner, who has NOT disassembled or formally reverse engineered the unit, I can reasonably surmise, purely from direct unit observation & 3 disclosures from Honeywell that the fan in my 5300B, which is Energy Star certified, is an AC *induction* motor &, therefore, *brushless*. First, Honeywell discloses that the motor is AC, that the unit consumes 162watts in Turbo mode & that the standard warranty is 5yrs for 24hrs x 365dys of continuous operation. The 5yr warranty for continuous use heavily points to brushless AC induction - mechanical brushes fail sooner, rather than later. The (relatively high) 162 maximum watt consumption in Turbo mode points AGAINST DC brushless & towards less power efficient AC induction. The quietness of the fan, in all non-Turbo modes, points against any mechanical motor brushes. As mechanical brushes wear, they are prone to generating ozone from brush "sparking," too. I never smell any ozone around my 5300B. I would be only too happy to see Honeywell reverse itself & disclose the type of AC motor that is in the 5300B. I always prefer transparency over opacity. I am never fearful of correcting myself in the face of facts. Facts are all that finally matter. No one is asking Honeywell to disclose the MAKE or the specific MODEL of this fan. I agree that those details are LEGITIMATE "trade secrets." Honeywell, please rethink & reformulate the answer to this question.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.UPDATE - VERY LATE DISCLOSURE TO ME BY HONEYWELL/HELEN OF TROY SUPPORT:: The fan motor in the HPA-5300B is 1) AC and 2) *brushed*, not brushless. The good thing is that Honeywell finally chose to disclose this data point. Disappointing, though, because brushed motors are subject to much more wear & tear than brushless motors. Honeywell's warranty backs this motor for 5yrs, but Honeywell makes no guarantees about motor/fan noise levels. This can be important, because as electro-mechanical brushes wear down, they can become noisier in operation w/ that wear. So, not clear to me that a motor making more noise due to brush wear would be replaced under warranty. Brushed motors also create electrical micro sparks with every revolution. As brushes wear down, this SPARKING CAN PRODUCE OZONE (albeit in significantly lower quanties than "ionizing" air purifiers). Also, much more difficult to monitor power consumption/speed ratios of brushed motors for better fan speed control and better estimating optimal HEPA filter condition/replacement times - monitoring this ratio is practically built-in w/ brushless motors. Brushless motors can be more power efficient than brushed motors, too. Finally, when Honeywell pitches the 5300B to remove VOC-s from room air, why deliberately choose a sparking prone brushed motor, when brushless motors do not throw any electrical sparks. Some VOC-s are highly flammable & should not be exposed to any sparks, electrical or otherwise. So, why introduce any increased risk of sparking? Brushed motor feels unnecessarily penny-wise & pound foolish, Honeywell. There has to be a commodity brushless motor to turn this fan. THIS UPDATE REPLACES MY PREVIOUS ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION.

Unfortunately, we cannot provide information about the motor of this unit, as it is proprietary to the construction of our unit as a whole. Initially, when this unit was first manufactured, the Energy Star rating qualifications changed. While initial units of this model were not Energy Star certified under the new qualifications, we have remanufactured the motor so now these units are Energy Star certified under the new qualifications.
