It uses one pre-filter (HRF-AP1) and 3 HEPA filters (HRF-R3 - already contains the 3 filters). Genuine Honeywell pre-filter is about $15 and needs replacement 3 months. HEPA filter is around $60 and needs replacement once a year. Alternative brands are much cheaper and available online.

Called Honeywell to clarify the filter information for this product. The HPA5300B at a minimum requires a HEPA filter HRF-R1 and a Pre-filter HRF-AP1. This last filter has 2 uses as you cut it in half before use in the air purifier. The HEPA HRF-R1 should be replaced every 3 months. The Pre-filter HRF-AP1 should be replaced every 3 monts. Additional filter information: (1) A Pre-filter HRF-APP1 Household and Gas Reducing Universal Pre-filter can be substituted for the HRF-AP1; (2) HRF-A100 carbon pre-filters are the same as the Pre-filter HRF-AP1 but they pre-cut carbon filters with 4 in the package which equals a 1 year supply, since this filter should be changed every 3 months or quarterly; (3) The Honeywell Enhanced Odor and VOC filter is an optional product. On the website, the HPA5300B lists the following numbers to use if one wishes to use this enhanced filter: HRFSS1, HRFSK1, HRFSP1, HRFSC1 (uses 3). Using these part numbers, prices for all filter numbers can be found on the Honeywell website. The HEPA filters need to be replaced once per year, and can be purchased singly or in three packs for a discount per filter. The pre-filter needs to be replaced every 3 months and can be purchased as a large sheet that needs to be cut to size. Each large sheet, when cut to size, will produce 2 correctly sized pre-filters for this unit. Additionally, there is an optional Odor and VOC reducing "S" filter. This unit uses 3 of these filters. They require changing once every 3 months of use, but we advise using them on an "as needed" basis. I don't plan on using that one.
