There should be no "burning" smell whatsoever. If you smell "burning"/melting, return the unit as defective. Straight out of the retail box, the two layers of plastic bagging definitely impart a slight plastic bag aroma onto the unpacked unit. I wiped my 5300B down twice with a damp microfiber cloth (rinsing out the cloth between wipedowns). Then, after installing the unwrapped R/HEPA filters and unwrapped A/pre-filter, I ran my 5300B in Turbo mode for two hours. When I set the 5300B into Auto mode, all trace odors were gone. (During the Turbo mode shakedown, I tested the 5300B for intake leakages that bypass the filters and found none.) The A/pre-filter is activated charcoal, treated with xeolite. Uncontaminated activated charcoal is ordorless. It is supposed to *absorb* and *trap* odors until the contaminants overwhelm the carbon. Xeolite is an anti-microbial mineral salt. It inhibits odors by suppressing bacterial growth. Zeolite is usually odorless, but that depends on the actual salts used, which can vary. Xeolite is also hypoallergenic. Some people (not me) even mix powdered forms of xeolite with water to drink it. (I hope it is pharmaceutical grade zeolite.) As a filter treatment, xeolite should not irritate your airways. If in doubt, you should consult with an allergist about your own sensitivities to it. This unit is sold with all of the usual FCC disclaimers about radio interference. The 5300B utilizes no WiFi or Bluetooth radios itself. Unless you were to physically lean/lay in direct physical contact with the 5300B, the inverse square law of radiated EM power over distance should protect body-embedded medical devices, like pacemakers. If you can safely be near a notebook computer, the 5300B should be no more EM dangerous in similar, reasonable physical proximity.

The motor in the 5300B uses AC BRUSH technology. Bad/excessively worn motor brushes can produce micro sparks w/ every revolution & electrical sparking can produce ozone (albeit in much lower quanties than "ionizing" air purifiers). Contact Honeywell/Helen of Troy for warranty support if you think you smell ozone.

Please try again later. If indeed you have COPD, or anyone wanting to filter out cooking oil vapors (which are carcinogenic when inhaled), the only Honeywell S filter I would *rule out* is HRF-SK1, dubbed the "kitchen odor" S filter. SK1 is made of activated charcoal, treated w/ KMnO4. KMnO4 is a salt that acts as a powerful oxidant. My serious concern is that when cooking oil comes into direct contact w/ KMnO4, it will become 100% oxidized (if it wasn't already oxidized from the cooking). Rancid is a common term describing oxidated oils. Rancid oils/fats can trigger lethal inflammation when ingested by people already more susceptible to heart attack/stroke. I can reasonably speculate that breathing in rancid oil vapor could trigger respiratory events, if not the afformentioned heart attack/stroke. People who haven't read the SK1 data sheet miss the important fact that SK1 is indended to deal with common kitchen cleaning solvents, not aerosolized cooking oil. Any oil vapor that gets recirulated after coming in contact w/ KMnO4 would be highly unhealthy for all & potentially lethal for those at risk - in my opinion. Do the research on rancidity to validate this for yourself. The most reactively "neutral" S filter is the HRF-SC1 for construction/rennovation VOC solvents. SC1 is made of activated charcoal w/ a pelletized activated charcoal enhancement. If you need to suppress bacterial growth on the S filter, my next choice would be HRF-SP1 for pets. The activated charcoal SP1 is treated w/ anti-microbial, hypoallergenic zeolite - a non-oxidative mineral salt. Hope this helps...
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Thank you for your inquiry. This unit should not be making any noticeable odor. If you are encountering an odor with a new unit, we would advise running it in a well ventilated area for a few hours to air it out. This unit does not produce an electromagnetic field and will not interfere with an internal medical device. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to contact our consumer relations team by emailing us at [email protected]. Thank you.
