The pre-filter is an activated carbon impregnated foam filter. It's primary purpose is to assist in filtering odors, but it also catches pet hair, lint, and bigger particulates. This filter will fall apart if you attempt to wash it. The washable internal filter (they are both accessed via the removable back panel) is an electrostatic filter designed to capture smaller particles of things like dander and pollen. Just a tip: if you replace the pre-filter, make certain that it is pressed back under the retaining tabs on the rear grille. If you don't, it will make replacing the cover impossible as there is no excess room.

This particular unit should of come with a black foam prefilter as well as a rough carbon filter. The Carbon prefilter cannot be washed but is more effective then the foam prefilter which can be washed using warm water. I hope this information is helpful! Please try again later.This comes with two prefilters, the one that comes installed is the washable filter, the other optional one that comes with it is an odor filter that reduces odors in the room (and works pretty well too!). The odor reducing filter isn't washable but is relatively cheap to replace and lasts pretty long!
