Thank you for your question Marty. The two filters are held together by a tag and should have enough space between them for water to run through for cleaning freely. However, if debris is stuck in there you can pull them apart from one another. This will not hurt the effectiveness of your vacuum but it may need to be checked for cleaning on future uses. Just ensure that the white piece goes back into the gray filter frame first and the order and sides stay the same as it was when pulled apart. Thanks, Joseph - The Hoover Team
