As for the dirt stains from shoes, just use a little stain remover on the area if the stains are bad, then go over it several times in different directions. That should do the trick. I used the Pet Odor and Stain Removal cleaner from Bissell, but the Hoover brand probably has something comparable. It seems to do a better job of cleaning up stains than just the standard shampoo.
