It's like shampooing the rug but only in small areas. To remove a spot or suck up a soiled area from a spill or animal accidents. You might be able to shampoo a small rug with this cleaner but it really is more of a spot cleaning device.

It comes with a small cleaning solution bottle to try, which should be enough to clean a small rug and then some. It does quite well on my rugs and sucks the majority of water out of them when finished. This is not as powerful as a full size unit, but for your use it sounds like a perfect solution.
