Not exactly sure what you mean. These can be attached to the switch and used in place of Joy-cons. They are super cool. Twins like them better than the joy-cons.

Handheld mode refers to how your using the switch.
Typically handheld is what it is. Your holding the switch and using either the supplied joycons or the split grips to play on the go.

docked mode is if you want to play it on your tv which these controllers won’t work for.

These controllers are for handheld mode only

It means it can only be used while the switch is in handheld mode. It has no wireless capability, so it cannot be used as a controller while the switch is docked.

It means that you hook this into your switch. Think of these as joycons except they don't have any batteries in them. So they have to be attached to the switch to be used.

Yes. Handheld mode is how the switch comes in the box. You can play it like a Gameboy. With the slide controller pieces on the side how the switch normally looks. The picture I uploaded is portable/handheld mode
