• You can use WordPad for free, but it doesn't have the full features of Word. You could also purchase Office Classic 2019 for a one-time price instead of "subscribing" to Office 365, and that would come with a full version of Word (as well as Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote).

• Yes, you can. Windows 10 Home includes a basic word processing program (app in today's parlance) called Word Pad, which is fine for letters, papers, documents, etc. In addition, you might consider buying Microsoft Office Home and Student, which you can buy and use forever, rather than renting Office 365 every year. In addition, there are word processing programs (apps) that are compatible with Microsoft Word, available for purchase or download from the web, such as Ashampoo Office or Office Suite 3.0 (available for purchase at BestBuy), each for about $30.
