“Does the automatic feed tray allow for staples (and/or paper clips) to be shredded? Or do staples (and/or paper clips) have to be removed prior to putting the papers in the automatic feeder?”

It will handle staples. The specs don't mention paperclips, but if the metal they're made from is no larger than you'd find in a normal staple it should handle those as well.
