Operating an external monitor, either with or instead of the built-in, does little to add heat to the computer, so overheating is hardly an issue in this case, unless other factors are already adding to the issue, like room temperature, or possibly blocked vents. Follow HP's instructions for procedure and you will generally be fine.

To do this go to Power Settings: Adjust your power settings to ensure the laptop does not go to sleep when the lid is closed. You can do this by going to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does, and then selecting "Do nothing" for both battery and plugged-in options.
