“Can the battery be replaced in this model when it runs out. In other words, is it locked in so far that it has to be brought in to a shop to remove the old battery.”

It can be replaced, but it's fairly major computer surgery, so you'll really want a competent tech to do it. Few if any laptops now have a battery that you can access without partially disassembling the computer to get to it.
