For those that didn't read the specifications of this computer... it ships with "Windows 10 Home in S Mode". S Mode is a somewhat simplified version of Windows 10 Home. It requires that all applications are purchased via the Microsoft Store (similar to the Apple App Store or Android Google Play Store), and that means you can not directly install apps that you may have purchased elsewhere. They promote this as a security measure to help prevent the installation of malware. Also S Mode exclusively uses the Microsoft Edge browser and the Bing search engine and you can not change it. Again they say this is to enhance security. I can see it arguably desirable on a very low powered machine but they purport it is for school systems and the like to control what is installed (which is absurd as that can be controlled with existing Windows technologies used in business called Active Directory). It can be switched out of S mode, but i suspect there will be lots of unhappy people buying this and finding that they need to purchase new version of the application software which they thought they already had bought. Good luck!

It is a one time switch, and you cannot go back to S Mode after switching. There may be a decrease in performance going from S mode to Windows 10, but this model has plenty of processing power and memory to keep you moving.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.laptop was annoying loaded with this S mode.. BUT..... and its a huge BUT..... it was extremely easy to switch over to no S Mode. IT took me 3 clicks maybe and it doesn't take an install or anything.. its just literally unlocking it and thats it.. i was dreading a longer process and it was not .. thank god.. i really wasn't in the mood when i first recieved this laptop but to be fair it was EASY to switch over. I ended up googling.. how to switch out of windows s mode.. and its done through the microsoft store. easy process.. dont let that deter you from buying the laptop... let my headache bring relief to you that it was super easy. I probably wouldn't have purchased knowing it was s mode and that would of been a mistake.. im happy with this laptop now. The first 20 minutes after i unboxed it.. i was not.. i couldnt install google or firefox and i was losing my mind... i calmed down.. did a few searches .. found the way and it was a big WHEW.. so dont let it deter u from buying this laptop. hope this helps... performance seems fine.. its just to protect your computer from bad programs that smode prevents u from only downloading form windows store. No performance difference.. just accessiblity to all the programs that u can find and downlaod is all.

If you want to install an app that isn't available in the Microsoft Store, you'll need to switch out of S mode. Switching out of S mode is one-way. If you make the switch, you won't be able to go back to Windows 10 in S mode. There's no charge to switch out of S mode. On your PC running Windows 10 in S mode, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation. In the Switch to Windows 10 Home or Switch to Windows 10 Pro section, select Go to the Store. (If you also see an "Upgrade your edition of Windows" section, be careful not to click the "Go to the Store" link that appears there.) On the Switch out of S mode (or similar) page that appears in the Microsoft Store, select the Get button. After you see a confirmation message on the page, you'll be able to install apps from outside of the Microsoft Store.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Thank you for your honest answer. This is very helpful. That was my question when I read SMode. You are correct. We are not school children. Why do they want to filter any application we decide to download on a machine we buy. We are adults. We should be able to make our own choices. I don't like Edge or Bing. Thank you. You save me some frustrated time.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Actually when I pulled mine out of s mode I went to windows 10 pro not home so pay attention because some are better than others
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You cannot *easily* disable S mode without a Microsoft Account. Many people have good, professional, reasons for not wanting an MS account. S mode might prevent you from using expensive software that you already own. It also prevents you from installing programs that you might need for work (or play) that are not in the MS Store. It also restricts access to local administration and control of your computer. You cannot even install your preferred antivirus. You cannot use your preferred browser. Sophisticated users know how to access the command line and programs such as regedit to disable S mode. Amateur users will not be able to disable it this way. So the short answer is that you must agree to have an MS account, and basically allow MS full rights to monitor, share and sell data about what you do on the computer that you just bought. (Read the contract terms and conditions.). If you're good with that, go ahead and buy an S mode system and sign up for an MS Account.
