If you get contrary information from different people (including HP or Best Buy), go to the website of one of the main RAM manufacturers, like Kingston or Crucial. They maintain the most up-to-date information on expanding RAM, including what kind of pairings you can make (16GB in one slot, 8 in another, etc.). It is their business to sell you RAM, make sure you are happy with it, and come back to them. The PC manufacturer is disinterested in this. If HP doesn't provide instructions on how to do this, you can usually find it on YouTube. Be aware, however, that on most consumer laptops (as opposed to those made for business), an authorized technician must be used for any upgrade, or the warranty will be voided.
