Windows defender does a decent job even when you go out of S Mode. With that said, almost every virus protection program out there has pros and cons. I would suggest doing some research into the different programs and look at what your needs are to determine if you need to buy something. Example: you only visit a handful of trusted websites that you download from. You are probably fine with Windows defender. Example 2: you are downloading all kinds of things from random websites and users, you probably need to upgrade to something else. No program is perfect and a new virus or malware can always slip through the cracks.
