I have same laptop and I bought the "Thermaltake blac X" product part #ST0005U-C and it's been great. If you have more than 1 hard drive like I do you can run 1 then push eject and plug in another (both 2.5 & 3.5 SATA HDD and SSD compatible) and it's easier and faster than changing CD's. Simple to setup and use for beginners like myself. As for the built in surge protection I haven't a clue as I mentioned I'm new to all this hightech stuff and refer you to the geek squad as they have helped me with any and every issue, question, and frustration I've thrown at them and believe me there have been plenty.
