“I purchased this for my mom and trying to set/update before gifting it for Christmas. However, the screen is beyond dim that I cant even see the screen for set up. Yes the powercord is connected to the laptop and the brightness button doesnt work.”

Interesting. I got this as a Christmas present and it's all wrapped up already. I would suggest if you can, first try restarting the laptop and if that doesn't work, restart it again and immediately try to go into the bios and see if you can make adjustments there. Good luck
