“I am trying to connect an external monitor using an HDMI cable. Connecting the monitor HDMI jack to the USB on the laptop but the monitor is not picking up the laptop. I have used the monitor on an older laptop with a VGA cable that works fine.”

You can’t connect usb to hdmi or vise versa. You have to connect vga to vga, usb to usb hdmi to hdmi
