“The white on the screen is so bright I can hardly see the words nor can I hardly see the menu bar. I tried making the screen darker but it didn't help at all.”

Increasing the display "scale" can help to make text bigger and easier to see. Right-click on the desktop and choose "Display Settings". Then scroll down and look for "Scale and layout". You can change it from 100% to something larger, like 150%.
