“Is it possible to use your mac in clamshell mode (closed) while using this monitor? Every time I close my mac, the monitor goes to sleep/ loses connection. I'd like to be able to use just the monitor as my display with my bluetooth mouse and keyboard.”

You'll need to find the micro switch that puts the Mac to sleep when you lose it - and disable it.
