• I chose to connect one using the HDMI cable and bought an adapter to connect it via USB.

• I have used 1 hdmi & 1 vga or dvi & vga when connecting 2 monitors to a computer with only 1 graphics card. It has worked quite nicely so far and I have been able to use cables I already had and have not needed to purchase splitters or other additional hardware.

• You can use 2 different ports (HDMI and VGA as you mentioned) on the laptop. They both don't have to use HDMI. I hope this helps.
