Yes you can. I have never seen the XL in anything but black. My other colors are always just the plain 564. The XL just means that the cartridge last longer. It doesn't have anything to do with the way it works in your 5510.

Yes, the printer doesn't care since the difference is mostly in the height. I used the XL black all the time although my other colors are the regular size. My printer also takes the photo black. I have it in XL as well but not the colors.
