Thank you for your question! It's difficult to tell what the life of an ink cartridge will be when not in use. I highly recommend printing a "test page" every week or two to keep things flowing and in good condition. If you will not be printing for months at a time, I would highly recommend a LaserJet that uses toner rather than ink, as toner doesn't dry up over time.
