They can, but if you make sure the printer either goes into "sleep mod" or that you shut it off when you're not using it, that will cap the print heads so they're not exposed to air and that will greatly extend how long you can go before the ink dries in the printheads. I've gone several months without printing and didn't have any problems. You should be fine with that kind of occasional use. If you wanted, you could print a page every couple of weeks to make sure the ink is still flowing through the heads. The printer status report is a good choice for that.
