“Message printhead missing, incorrectly installed-- does this mean a new cartridge is needed?”

I would not buy more ink. If the printhead is bad new ink will not help. You can try some troubleshooting options at this link. https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04100778 If none of those troubleshooting options work. You will need to get a new printer.
