• This product takes 63 black. You do not need a color cartridge for black and white printing.

• When you buy this printer it automatically comes with one black ink cartridge and one color ink cartridge. You should install both with a 'hard push' till it clicks in. You "will always have the option" to print to print in black and white or color. Even if you never plan to print in color it would be best to install the color cartridge anyways because the 'HP software will check to see if both cartridges are correctly set' and see the missing color cartridge and 'warn you' about the missing ink 'constantly.'
