HP makes an educated guess on how much ink you'll need in the first six months. If it isn't enough, you'll be shipped replacements and if it's more than you needed, you can continue to use the ink until it gets low enough that it needs replacement. There isn't a specific cost for a black in cartridge. After the six months is up, you'll be charged a monthly fee ($3.99 for 50 pages a month) and you'll get ink (black, color, or both) shipped to you as needed at no additional cost.
