The lid is closed while scanning because the scanner needs to get a good contrast of the image or file that it illuminates with its lamp.External light causes partial overexposure, streaks or colored patterns on the image. If the document cover does not close properly due to the document larger than the document glass, cover the document with a thick dark cloth to shut out any external light.
