Eventually you should buy a newer one so the operating system will continue to be supported by Microsoft. I have older ones that still work too but there's only so far they can be updated. While yours is still working you should make a backup of any important personal files (pics, music, documents, etc...) to an external hard drive or travel drive. That way if your computer dies you'll still have them. Plus they can then be added to a new computer much easier!

I can't tell you if you'll be able to get your data back, because it's going to depend on what exactly goes out. In any case, it's wise to have a backup of your data so you'll know you've got a good copy of your data available whenever the computer does go south on you.
