“What is that cd drive looking thing on the front of the pc for. I haven't figured out a way to open it”

I think it is just a fake panel in case you want to add a CD or DVD drive.

It's a "dummy panel" (meaning it's there, but doesn't do anything). It doesn't have a built in CD/DVD drive but you can use an external that connects to one of the USB ports on the computer.

Some computers support “Super Slim” Optical drives. I suggest the you get in tough with HP customer support and find out if the Motherboard will support one.
