• This HP Printer supports Single-cartridge mode, To use the single-cartridge mode to operate the HP ENVY 4500 series with only one ink cartridge. The single-cartridge mode is initiated when an ink cartridge is removed from the ink cartridge carriage. To exit single-cartridge mode Install both the black and tri-color cartridges in the HP ENVY 4500 series to exit single-cartridge mode.

• Seems the printer spits out an error message on my laptop, when I try, if the color cartridge is empty.

• Yes you can just print in black only with this Envy.

• Yes, printing in black and white is possible without having color ink cartridges in the printer.

• No. The printer will ask you to replace the cartridge to allow you to print.

• NO there must be a color cartridge installed at all times. I found that out from a Geek Squad member.
