Depending on the capabilities of your desktop you should be able to connect either via Ethernet cable or wirelessly. The choice will depend on your setup, meaning, where your router is located and where you want to put the computer. One advantage of the cable is that it might be faster. I had a desktop in the same room as my router but connected wirelessly and it was much slower than my other desktop connected by cable. (It was also an older computer, so that might have had something to do with it.) Even if your computer is in the same room it might be better to run a cable to it. If it's not in the same room a cable might be harder to use, but then you also have to worry about having a good signal (i.e., not too many walls between the router and computer).

Sometimes a wired connection is the most reliable, but that depends on your internet service provider. You could also use a longer cord if it appears your most robust signal comes when directly wired to the router, and you're not going to be positioned nearby.
