Apologies for what you're experiencing. Most often, it is not the fault of the laptop. A robust signal from your router can travel 150 to 300 feet (5G about 50 feet) but will not travel through walls or infrastructure containing metal. Have you tried elevating your router or removing obstructions in the path to your laptop? Do you have a saved network to which the laptop is trying to connect, that's not within 150-300 feet? (Or is it defaulting to a network you're not wanting to use?) If you are upstairs and the router is downstairs, you might want to purchase a WiFi extender. Your internet provider can offer more solutions.
