Looking at the HP website there are a number of seemingly minor but possibly significant differences. You'll have to decide for yourself, but I find it strange that the HP folks here make it sound like the older M479 is a better machine by highlighting the newer M480 as having a slower processor - Keeping in mind that processor clock frequency alone does not necessarily equate to better processor performance and other architectural changes may result in similar if not even better performance. Anyway, among other things, the M480 is listed as having more RAM and a higher duty cycle/recommend monthly page volume. The M480 also has a higher list price. Again, this is all from the HP website. I recently installed an M480 which we chose over the older M479 because of the increased RAM. I suspect the M480 may have some additional so called "enterprise" features as part of the underlying software/firmware, hence the "Enterprise" moniker, but since I have not worked with a M479 it can't say for certain. Maybe it's just a marketing naming ploy and both models have the same features in their Jetdirect embedded web platform. It would be nice if an expert from HP laid out a full blown one-for-one specs comparison, since various third-party and even HP's own website seem to jumble some of the details. For example, I believe both models have the same native resolution and image enhancement capabilities, but looking at the HP website you might think there are differences and that the older M479 has a higher enhanced output resolution. Other places say the M480 has a nigher resolution, but again, I don't believe that is accurate either. I believe they have essentially the same print engines and that maybe, if the HP duty cycle info is correct, the M480 may have slightly better paper path components to offer a higher duty cycle. Note that both models take the same toner cartridge part numbers.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Thank you for the question. The biggest difference is that the M480f is Ethernet only, although you can purchase an adapter if you want a wireless connection. The M479fdw has a faster processor speed - 1200MHz, as opposed to 800 MHz with the M480f.
