It's a laser printer. It uses a toner cartridge. When the toner runs out, you replace the cartridge with a new one. Of course, that was a useless question.

Once the chip on the cartridge says you're out of toner you replace it with a new one. HP+ membership keeps you supplied one cartridge ahead so you'll always have a spare on hand for instant replacement. Hope this answers your concern.

I which this is a color ink but other than that I loved my new printer. I paid $19.00 coursed I used my CC Best Buy points rewards.
