Hello. Thanks for your question. Yes, you can add an additional 550 sheet paper tray to this printer. You would need the HP LaserJet 550-sheet Feeder Tray (CF404A).

Re: printing a file with two different types of paper - do not know if this is possible with dual paper trays. I DO know that it is NOT possible with just the single included paper tray. You may also find it useful to know that in order to load paper larger than 8.5x11", you must extend the included "on board" paper tray to fit the larger paper, which then makes this tray stick out from the front of the machine by a couple inches. In my setup, there isn't much room between the printer and front edge of the table it's sitting on, which means the tray hangs out over the edge of the table when larger paper is loaded. I don't print much at sizes bigger than 8.5x11" so this isn't a big deal for me (I love the printer connectivity, speed and print quality) but if you print a lot with legal sized paper, you'll want to be aware of that necessary accommodation.
