Hello! That is a great question, thank you! The maximum height the printer reaches is 17.9"H, which is 7.6" more than the 12.3"H. My recommendation is an extra 8" above to accommodate the scanner and allow a little clearing room. Please note, it is not required to open the scanning door to the maximum height to access the flatbed. I hope this helps!
