• You don't have to sign up for monthly purchase, that's just an option. The printer comes with a cartridge in it for printing right away. I would imagine you could buy compatible ink for it but I just bought an extra cartridge when I bought the printer.

• Yes you can buy separate toner for the printer as needed. There is no monthly subscription. Follow the manufacturer recommendation and purchase the appropriate/ compatible HP toner cartridge for the HP printer
