Yes it can print in only B/W even when there is a color cartridge as long as there is ink in the B/W cartridge. Just select Black/White or even grayscale in some models when you configure it that way in the printer settings.

If choosing to print from your computer instead, I believe you can choose black from the preferences tab after you give 'print' command.
