You have to have all ink cartridges in place. You can select to print black and white only and it will save the other colors. We have been printing on it for 5 months and only replaced tye colored inks once. USB is on the side

The 9015 does have a port for a USB flash drive. It is on the left side of the printer. This printer will use individual ink cartridges. You will just need to change the ink that is empty.
