Card stock is a very heavy type of paper, like what you'd commonly find in index cards and other heavy items. Because the print heads are separate from the ink cartridges, you will not be able to print if you have only black ink installed. The ink also acts as a lubricant for the printheads as they move across the paper, so running them "dry" would be like driving a car without oil-it would quickly wear the printheads out, and replacing them is a significant portion of the cost of just buying a new printer.
